1. Rediscover the joy of reading books- dust off those inventions of imagination, those tickets to exotic travel locals, those avenues of adventure and rediscover the joy of limitless exploration through the written word.
2. Pull down the game boards and locate the cards - This can be a great getaway for one person (solitaire) or for groups of people. Family and friends will gather together to conquer the world in a brisk game of Risk or become real estate moguls in Monopoly or shoot the moon in Rook high. Combine this with a big bowl of freshly popped, lightly buttered and salted popcorn and you have a good evening of entertainment.
3. Learn the joy of cooking together - What could be better than everyone getting in the kitchen and making a meal together.
4. Plan a "rock soup" party and invite family or neighbors to bring what they have available. The fun is in seeing what everyone brings and making a meal out of what you have available.
5. And last but not least, actually sitting around and conversing with each other. Throw out a topic of conversation and see where it takes you... you might find that the art of persuasion is alive and well and that you have great words of wisom to add to the conversation.

...or get everyone in the car and drive to the other side of town for an "international experience" for dinner. While gas prices are on the rise, we can take comfort in knowing that our carbon footprint is growing small everyday.
